Times Square and Theater District

Times Square, one of New York's most famous landmarks, is frequently referred to as the ''Crossroads of the World''. Situated in the middle of Midtown Manhattan around the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, Times Square is visited by approximately 1.5 million people every day. Its most famous part, located to the north of 42nd Street, is filled with mega-billboards and glittery neon marquees. Hence, the area is often called ''Great White Way''.

Originally, Times Square was known as Long Acre Square. However, since the 25-story One Times Square, ''the New York Times'' headquarters, was built here, the place was renamed Times Square. Though the famous newspaper moved to 43rd Street, the ''live newspaper'', the first electronic board displaying current news, reminds of the history of New York City's major square.

Times Square NYMoreover, what makes Times Square famous all over the world is the abundance of theatres, of which Broadway is the most celebrated . They are mainly situated in an area stretching from 41st to 54th Streets between Sixth and Ninth Avenues, which is commonly known as the Theater District. One can choose from a wide selection of top shows and performances offered by dozens of Broadway and off-Broadway theaters. Major ones, which should be seen while touring New York's Midtown, include: the Lyceum, the oldest and one of the most beautiful of Broadway theaters, the New Victory, best known for innovative shows for the youth, the New Amsterdam Theater specializing in Disney productions and the popular Ford Centre for the Performing Arts.

Apart from outstanding musical and theatrical performances, Times Square and Theater District draw both adults and kids with a dizzying array of attractions. Some come here to see the MTV headquarters, the NASDAQ seat, the Virgin Megastore – the world's largest music shop, the super-size Toys'R'US toy store, the Manny's Music – top-notch music outfitter, the Drama Bookshop – a bookstore for Broadway fans, the Brill Building – the seat of music producers with the historic Colony music shop, and the famous Madame Tussaud's Museum. Others are attracted by numerous multiplex theatres, video-game and sporting complexes, the World – one of the largest night clubs of New York , Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum or the Sardi's, the restaurant favoured by actors and producers who gather here to have their first night party.

If planning to stay in New York City at the Christmas season, come to Times Square at New Year's Eve to watch the world-famous countdown to midnight with an illuminated Waterford Crystal ball descent from the roof of One Times Square as the climax of the festivities.
