Tipping
|
|
''While in New York, do as New Yorkers do''. Namely, tipping in bars, good hotels and restaurants is a custom. Bartenders usually expect the minimum tip equal to 1$ for each drink served, whereas in fast-food and take-away bars there is a tip jar where it is a good idea to drop a quarter or two. As for restaurants, the wait staff expect at least 15 % tip. The common practise of New Yorkers is a straight 20% tip or a double 8.625 % sales tax. If satisfied with the services rendered by hairdressers, taxi-drivers and baggage carriers, one should tip about 15 %. While staying in a hotel, be ready to ''pay'' $5 to the cleaning staff per day. For carrying bags at the airport or at the hotel, the $2 tip (for the first bag) and the $1 tip (for each extra bag) is expected.
